Ultimate Guide: 5 Habits to Get More Google Reviews In Mauritius to Boost Trust
To get more Google reviews, ask every customer, at the moment they are happiest, with a link that takes one tap, and reply to every review you receive. For a service business in Mauritius, that comes down to five habits: ask everyone, ask at the right moment, send your review link by WhatsApp, follow up once, and answer every review within a day. Never offer anything in return: Google bans it, and it can get your profile restricted.
THE QUICK ANSWER
- Ask every customer, not only the happy ones.
- Ask at the right moment: right after they see the result.
- Make it one tap: send your Google review link by WhatsApp, or show a QR code.
- Follow up once, two or three days later.
- Reply to every review within a day, good or bad.
Never give a discount, gift or free service for a review.
The rest of this guide explains each habit: why it works, how to do it this week, and the exact words to use, in English, French and Creole. The example is the same fictional mobile car valeting business from my Google Business Profile guide for service businesses, but the system works for salons, clinics, home services, garages, tutors and professional services. As a bonus, I also give you a solution at the end that would automate all of this without having to do any of this it manually. I implemented the same solution for businesses I work with.

Why Google reviews matter so much for a service business
When someone needs a service, they are trusting you with their home, their car, their health or their money. Reviews are how they decide whether you are safe to call.
The numbers are clear. In BrightLocal’s 2026 survey of consumers (BrightLocal, 2026):
- 97% read reviews for local businesses.
- 68% need at least a 4-star rating before they will use a business.
- 74% want to see reviews from the last three months.
Reviews also help you appear on Google Maps. Google says that “more reviews and positive ratings can help your business’s local ranking” (Google Business Profile Help).
In my guide to marketing strategy for small businesses in Mauritius, this is the Trust stage. For most service businesses, reviews are the fastest way to fix it, and they cost nothing.
Check yours: open your Google profile. When was your last review? Potential customers are looking at this.
Habit 1: Ask every customer, not only the happy ones
Most businesses only ask the customers who look delighted. It feels safe, but Google does not allow asking only happy customers, and it is one of the practices its review policy bans.
Asking everyone also works in your favour. Google itself notes that “a mix of positive and negative feedback often feels more trustworthy” (Google Business Profile Help). A profile with forty 5-star reviews and nothing else can look too good to be true. It is important to have a mix of reviews in your profile.
How to do it: make asking part of how you finish every job, like taking payment. If it depends on your mood that day, it will not happen. At the end of the day, you need to provide a good service. That’s how you will get good reviews for your business.
Trying to cheat the system with positive reviews only will not inspire trust in your potential customers. Aim to have an overall review of above 4 stars for your business.
Habit 2: Ask at the right moment
The best moment is right after the customer sees the result, while they still feel it. Ask in person first (“Would you mind leaving us a short Google review? I will send you the link”), then send the link.
| Type of business | The right moment to ask |
|---|---|
| Mobile car valeting | When the customer opens the car door and sees the clean interior |
| Hair or beauty salon | At the mirror, when they see the finished look |
| Aircon or plumbing repair | After the test run, once everything works |
| Clinic or therapist | At the follow-up visit, when they feel the improvement |
| Tutor | When the student gets their results, or at the end of term |
| Accountant or consultant | When the work is delivered, for example after a tax return is filed |
Check yours: what is the moment in your service when customers are happiest? That is when you ask.
If you wait for your customers to go home then ask them to give you a review, they might never do it. It is easier for businesses which have an after sale service to get reviews after the fact because they stay in the mind of the customer. But for businesses that provide services that comes to an end after payment is done like Valeting and Hair Salon, better ask on the spot.
It was the case for the valeting business I was working with. When he would ask for a review on chat after a few days, most people would “forget” to give the review but after I implemented a system where the customer reviews the business after payment is done, he got more reviews.
Habit 3: Make it one tap
Every extra step loses people. Do not tell customers to “search for us on Google and leave a review”. Send them a direct link that opens the review box. Google itself suggests asking customers to visit a Google link or scan a QR code (Google Business Profile Help).
How to get your review link:
- Open your Google Business Profile while signed in to the business account.
- Look for “Ask for reviews” or “Get more reviews”.
- Copy the short link, or download the QR code.
Where to put it:
- In a WhatsApp message after every job (the main one)
- As a QR code on your counter, invoice or receipt
- On a small sticker inside your van or at your reception
- In your email signature

Ready-to-copy messages
English:
“Thank you for trusting us today, [Name]. If you have a minute, a short Google review would help our small business a lot. Here is the link: [link]”
French:
“Merci de nous avoir fait confiance aujourd’hui, [PrĂ©nom]. Si vous avez une minute, un petit avis sur Google aiderait beaucoup notre petite entreprise. Voici le lien : [lien]”
Creole:
“Mersi boukou [Nom] ki ou finn fer nou konfians zordi. Si ou ena enn ti minit, eski ou capav avoy nou enn ti review lor Google pou ed nou. Ala link la, merci: [lien]”
Notice what the messages do not say: no rating to give, no words to include, nothing offered in return. That keeps you inside Google’s rules.
Tip: save these as quick replies in WhatsApp Business, so sending one takes a few seconds.
Habit 4: Follow up once
Many customers mean to leave a review and simply forget. One polite reminder, two or three days later, brings in reviews you would otherwise miss. More than one feels like pressure, so stop there.
“Hello [Name], just a gentle reminder in case you had a moment for a quick Google review. It really helps us. Thank you again! [link]”
Tip: add two columns to your customer spreadsheet: “Review asked” and “Reminder sent”. It takes a few seconds per customer and stops anyone being asked twice.
Just do not wait a few days before sending the initial request because they will forget about the service in general.
Habit 5: Reply to every review within a day
Replying shows future customers that a real person is behind the business. It also encourages more people to write reviews, because they can see they are read.
Customers expect it. In BrightLocal’s 2026 survey, 89% said they expect business owners to respond, 32% expect a reply within a day, and half said they view generic, copy-paste replies negatively (BrightLocal, 2026). Google’s own advice is to keep replies brief, personal and not promotional.
| Review | How to reply | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 5 stars | Thank them by name and mention something specific | “Thank you, Priya. So glad the seats came out looking new before your trip!” |
| 3 stars | Thank them, acknowledge what was missing, say what you will do | “Thank you, Ravi. You are right that the booking took too long to confirm. We now reply to every booking request within an hour.” |
| 1 or 2 stars | Stay calm, own what went wrong, fix it, take it to a private chat | “Hello Kevin, thank you for telling us. We arrived 40 minutes late and should have called ahead. We would like to make it right, so please message us on WhatsApp.” |
Check yours: do you have any reviews with no reply? Answer them today, even the old ones.
What you must never do

Google’s rules on reviews are strict, and it tightened them again in April 2026. Breaking them can get reviews removed and your profile restricted.
- No incentives. Google says: “Offering incentives, like free or discounted goods or services, in exchange for customers to post reviews… is strictly prohibited” (Google Business Profile Help). That includes discounts, gifts, free services and lucky draws.
- No selective asking. Do not ask only happy customers, or send unhappy ones somewhere else.
- No staff quotas. Since 17 April 2026, businesses may not set staff targets for the number of reviews they collect (PPC Land, April 2026).
- No scripted content. Do not ask customers to include specific words, such as a staff member’s name.
- No fake reviews. Do not write reviews yourself, and do not ask friends or family who never used your service.
- No review swaps with other businesses.
Example: 30 days of review habits
Brillan Mobile Valeting is a fictional business in Quatre Bornes. The table below is illustrative, to show how the habits add up.
| Before | After 30 days of the five habits | |
|---|---|---|
| How reviews were asked for | Only when the owner remembered | After every job, by WhatsApp, with one reminder |
| Reviews in the last 3 months | None | New reviews coming in every week |
| Replies to reviews | None | Every review answered within a day |
| What a new customer sees | A 4.6 rating from over a year ago | Recent, detailed reviews with the owner’s replies |
Nothing here costs money. It takes one WhatsApp message per job, one reminder, and five minutes a day to reply.
How to handle a bad review, step by step
- Do not reply straight away if you are upset. Wait an hour, but reply within the day.
- Check the facts. Find the booking and speak to whoever did the job.
- Reply publicly, briefly and calmly. Thank them, own what went wrong, and say what you have changed.
- Move it to a private chat to fix the problem.
- Report it only if it breaks Google’s rules, for example if it is fake, offensive or from someone who was never a customer. Google decides. You cannot remove a genuine review because you disagree with it.
A calm, specific reply to a bad review can reassure future customers more than another five stars.
How to tell if it is working
Track four numbers each month in a simple spreadsheet:
| Month | Reviews asked for | New reviews | Average rating | % answered within a day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Month 1 | ||||
| Month 2 | ||||
| Month 3 |
If you ask 30 customers and receive very few reviews, the problem is usually the moment or the link. Try asking earlier, and check on your own phone that the link opens the review box.
Frequently asked questions
How many Google reviews does a small business need?
There is no magic number. Recency matters more than volume: 74% of consumers want to see reviews from the last three months. A steady flow of new reviews does more for you than a large number of old ones.
Can I ask friends and family for Google reviews?
Only if they genuinely used your service as customers. Reviews from people who never used your business count as fake reviews under Google’s rules.
Can I give a discount in exchange for a Google review?
No. Google strictly prohibits offering free or discounted goods or services in exchange for reviews, and it can restrict your Business Profile.
Can I delete a bad Google review?
Not because you disagree with it. You can report a review that breaks Google’s policies, such as fake, spam or offensive content, and Google decides. For a genuine bad review, reply calmly and fix the problem.
Should I reply to Google reviews in English or French?
Reply in the language the customer used. If they wrote in Creole, a reply in Creole or simple English is fine.
Why did a Google review disappear?
Google’s systems can remove reviews they judge to break its policies, for example reviews that look fake or incentivised. If genuine reviews keep disappearing, check that you are not offering anything in return.
Start with your next customer
More Google reviews do not come from a campaign. They come from a habit: ask every customer, at the right moment, with one tap, and reply to every review.
So start with your very next customer. Copy one of the messages above into your WhatsApp quick replies today.
If you want to know whether trust is really your weakest point, take the free Market Dominator Scorecard. It scores your business on the 5 stages, including Trust, and sends you the first fix for your weakest one.
What stops you from asking customers for reviews today?
How to get more Google reviews automatically?
If you have a lot of customers every day and do not have time to ask for a review in between customers or even reply to review, the solution I use is Highlevel CRM. It offers a Google review management system that send requests, reply to reviews and give you the general sentiment of the review. Client who work with me usually gets this system implemented.
