WhatsApp Business for Small Businesses in Mauritius: From Setup to First Sale

WhatsApp Business is a free app that turns your WhatsApp number into a proper shop counter: a business profile, a catalogue of your products, labels to track each customer, and saved replies so you answer in seconds. To get from setup to your first sale, set up the profile and catalogue, save five quick replies, turn on greeting and away messages, label every chat, and reply within five minutes during opening hours. Then follow up the people who go quiet.

THE QUICK ANSWER

  1. Install WhatsApp Business on a number used only for the business.
  2. Complete the profile: hours, address, description, website.
  3. Build a catalogue of your 10 best sellers, with prices.
  4. Save five quick replies for the questions you get every day.
  5. Label every chat so nobody falls through the cracks.
  6. Reply within five minutes, then follow up on day 1 and day 3.

The setup takes about 20 minutes. The reply habit is what makes the sales.

The app is free and takes 20 minutes to set up. Most businesses that use it still lose enquiries, because the app was never the problem. This guide covers both: how to set up every feature properly, and the habits that turn a chat into a sale.

I always my clients to use a Whatsapp Business account because it offers so much more than just the regular account. So if you are not using it yet, go download it NOW.

Why WhatsApp is the shop counter in Mauritius

In Mauritius, most customers find you on Facebook or Google, then message you before they visit or buy. According to DataReportal’s Digital 2026 report for Mauritius, there were 886,000 social media user identities in the country, about 70% of the population, and Facebook’s ad reach was the same 886,000. When a Facebook ad or post asks people to “send us a message”, WhatsApp is usually where that conversation lands.

That makes WhatsApp the point where marketing money becomes a sale, or is lost. In the WhatsApp-enquiry campaigns I have run, an enquiry has cost about Rs 15 in ad spend. The cost varies by industry, offer and season, and rises in busy periods such as December. But every chat that goes unanswered is money already spent. If you want to see how that cost feeds into a budget, read how much a business in Mauritius should spend on marketing.

In a marketing strategy, this is the conversion stage: turning interest into a sale. The conversion section of the small-business marketing strategy guide shows how it connects to the other four stages.

The conversation should not end after the first enquiry though, this is how you lose money in ad spend. I set up a system for my clients such as Ashley Furniture that allows the tracking of all messaging channels in one single place. WhatsApp Business is a first step but if you want to go to the next level, setting up a WhatsApp business API is the right move.

WhatsApp, WhatsApp Business or the WhatsApp Business Platform?

There are three versions, and most small businesses only need the second one.

VersionWhat it isCostBest for
WhatsApp (personal)The normal appFreeFamily and friends, not customers
WhatsApp Business appA free app with a business profile, catalogue, labels, quick replies, greeting and away messagesFreeMost shops, salons, clinics and service businesses
WhatsApp Business Platform (API)A connection used through software, for many staff, automation and large broadcastsPaid per message for most messages a business startsLarger teams and high message volumes

On the Platform, Meta now charges per delivered template message, and replies to a customer who has messaged you are free within a 24-hour window, according to Meta’s pricing page. You only need it when one phone can no longer cope.

Check yours: Is your business still using a personal WhatsApp number? If so, start by moving customers to a dedicated business number.

How to set up WhatsApp Business in 20 minutes

  1. Get a SIM used only for the business, so the number stays with the business, not with a staff member.
  2. Download the business app (the green icon with a “B”) and register the number.
  3. Add your business name, exactly as on your sign and Google profile.
  4. Choose your category, and add your address, opening hours, email and website or Facebook page.
  5. Write a short description: what you sell, where, and how to order. For example: “Linen dresses and accessories in Quatre Bornes. Order on WhatsApp, pick up or delivery island-wide.”
  6. Add a clear profile photo: your logo or your shopfront.
  7. Put the same number on your Facebook page, Instagram and Google My Business profile, so every channel leads to one chat.

WhatsApp’s own guide for small businesses lists the features you get for free: a business profile, a catalogue, labels and lists, greeting messages, away messages, quick replies, message statistics and customer notes.

Your WhatsApp Business catalogue

The catalogue lets customers browse your products inside the chat, with a photo, price and description for each one. It saves you sending the same photos 20 times a day.

Start small. Add your 10 best sellers, then the products people ask about most. Use this format for each item:

Name: Chocolate fudge cake, 1 kg

Price: Rs 1,200

Description: Serves 10. Order 48 hours ahead. Pick up in Mahébourg or delivery in the south.

Link: your website or Facebook post, if you have one

Example for a fictional bakery; price is illustrative

Then, when someone asks “what cakes do you have?”, send the catalogue in one tap instead of typing a list.

Labels: never lose track of an enquiry

Labels are coloured tags you put on each chat. They are the simplest sales pipeline you will ever use, and they are free. Here is a set that works for most small businesses:

LabelUse it whenNext action
New enquirySomeone has just asked a questionReply within 5 minutes
Quote sentYou have sent a price or a catalogue itemFollow up the next day
Follow upThey said “I will think about it” or went quietMessage on day 1 and day 3
Paid / BookedThey have paid or bookedConfirm, then ask for a review after delivery
VIPYour best repeat customersFirst to hear about new stock

Once a week, open the “Follow up” label and go through every chat. That ten-minute habit is often worth more than a new ad.

Quick replies: answer in seconds, in three languages

Quick replies are saved messages you send by typing “/” and a shortcut. Save one for every question you answer more than twice a day. Here are three to start with:

Price and availability (/price)

English: Hello and thank you for your message! The [product] is Rs [price]. We have it in stock in [sizes/colours]. Would you like us to keep one for you?

Nou ena li an stok dan [tay/kouler]. Ou anvi nou gard enn pou ou?

Location and hours (/where)

English: We are at [address], open [days] from [time] to [time]. Here is the map: [Google Maps link].

Français : Nous sommes au [adresse], ouverts du [jours] de [heure] à [heure]. Voici le plan : [lien Google Maps].

Kreol: Nou dan [ladres], ouver [zour] depi [ler] ziska [ler]. Ala lakart la: [lien Google Maps].

Delivery (/delivery)

English: We deliver island-wide for Rs [fee], usually within [days]. Payment by Juice, MyT Money or cash on delivery.

Français : Nous livrons partout à Maurice pour Rs [frais], en général sous [jours]. Paiement par Juice, MyT Money ou en espèces à la livraison.

Kreol: Nou livre partou dan Moris pou Rs [fre], an zeneral dan [zour]. Ou kapav pey par Juice, MyT Money ouswa kas kan ou resevwar.

Adapt the payment methods to the ones you actually accept.

Greeting and away messages

A greeting message is sent automatically the first time someone writes to you, or after 14 days without contact. An away message is sent outside your opening hours. Both stop customers feeling ignored.

MessageExampleTip
Greeting“Hello, welcome to [Business]! Tell us what you are looking for and we will reply in a few minutes. Our catalogue is here: [link]”Promise a reply time you can keep
Away“Thank you for your message! We are closed right now and will reply from [time] tomorrow. You can browse our catalogue in the meantime.”Set it to your real opening hours

Do not let the automatic message do the selling. It only buys you a few minutes. A real person still needs to reply.

The 5-minute reply habit

WhatsApp Business in action: a bakery owner in Mauritius replying to a customer message from her shop counter
The first good reply usually wins the sale.

Speed is the single biggest difference between chats that become sales and chats that die. In a well-known study published in the Harvard Business Review, Oldroyd, McElheran and Elkington looked at 1.25 million sales leads. Companies that contacted a lead within an hour were nearly seven times more likely to qualify it than those that waited even one hour longer, and more than 60 times more likely than those that waited 24 hours or more. In the same research, the average first response took 42 hours, and 23% of companies never replied at all (summary by Vivocha).

That study is about web leads in the US, not WhatsApp in Mauritius, but the lesson travels well: the customer who messages you is also messaging the shop next door. The first good answer usually wins.

How to make five minutes realistic:

  • Name one person responsible for WhatsApp during each shift.
  • Use quick replies for the first answer, then personalise.
  • Turn on notifications on a shop phone, not on a personal phone that goes home.
  • If you are with a customer, send “Thank you! I am with a customer and will reply in 10 minutes” rather than nothing.

Check yours: Message your own business number from a friend’s phone tomorrow at 11:00. How long does the reply take?

A simple follow-up that is not pushy

Many customers go quiet after asking the price. Most are not saying no. They got busy. A short, polite follow-up brings many of them back.

WhenMessageLabel after
Day 0Answer the question, send the catalogue item, and ask one easy question: “Would you like us to keep one for you?”Quote sent
Day 1“Hello [name], just checking if you had any other questions about the [product]. Happy to help!”Follow up
Day 3“Hello [name], we only have [number] left in your size. Shall I keep one for you until Saturday?” (only if it is true)Follow up
After thatStop. Leave the door open: “No problem at all, we are here whenever you need us.”Remove label

After a sale, send your Google review link a few days later. This guide on getting more Google reviews in Mauritius has ready-to-send messages.

Example: a bakery before and after

Ti Gato is a fictional cake shop in Mahébourg. The details are illustrative.

BeforeAfter
NumberThe owner’s personal WhatsAppA business SIM with the business app
CataloguePhotos sent one by one12 cakes with prices and order times
First replyIn the evening, after closingWithin 5 minutes, with a quick reply
TrackingMemoryLabels: New enquiry, Quote sent, Follow up, Paid
Follow-upNoneDay 1 and day 3 messages
Weekly habitNone10 minutes on Monday going through “Follow up”

Nothing in the “after” column costs money. It is a setup and a habit.

Why WhatsApp Business alone will not grow your sales

Here is the trap. A business sets up a perfect profile, a beautiful catalogue and clever quick replies, and enquiries still arrive and die: slow replies, no follow-up, and no idea which customers are worth the most effort.

The app is a tool. The tool is not the strategy. WhatsApp can only convert the people your marketing sends to it, with the offer you give them, at the speed your team can answer. If ads bring the wrong people, or nobody owns the replies, the app just collects unanswered chats. More ads will not fix a leaking bucket.

That is why it pays to find your weakest stage first. If chats come in but do not turn into sales, conversion is your problem, and the fix is often a reply rule and a follow-up routine, not a bigger ad budget. The five stages of a small-business marketing strategy help you see where WhatsApp fits.

Check yours: Out of the last 20 people who messaged your business, how many bought? If you do not know, that is the first thing to fix.

When to move beyond the app

The free app is enough for most small businesses. Consider the WhatsApp Business Platform with a customer relationship management (CRM) tool when:

  • more than two people need to answer from the same number at once,
  • you are handling more chats than you can label by hand each day,
  • you want automatic reminders, order confirmations or broadcasts to large customer lists,
  • you need reports on how many chats became sales, by campaign.

Until then, labels and a weekly review do the same job for free.

You can use the Highlevel CRM as a WhatsAPP business API provider for your broadcast needs. If you want me to set it up for you, feel free to contact me.

Frequently asked questions

Is WhatsApp Business free?

Yes. The WhatsApp Business app is free to download and use. The separate WhatsApp Business Platform, used through software for large teams, charges per message for most messages a business starts.

Can I use WhatsApp Business and my personal WhatsApp on the same phone?

Yes, as long as they use two different numbers. Many phones support two SIMs, which makes this easy.

Can I move my current WhatsApp number to WhatsApp Business?

Yes. When you register WhatsApp Business with a number already on WhatsApp, the app offers to move it, including your chat history. Make a backup first.

How many products can I add to the WhatsApp Business catalogue?

Enough for a small shop. Start with your 10 best sellers and the products people ask about most, rather than your whole stock.

Should I reply in English, French or Creole?

Reply in the language the customer used. Saving quick replies in all three makes this fast.

Can I send promotions to all my customers on WhatsApp?

Only to customers who have agreed to hear from you, and not too often. Sending unwanted promotions is the fastest way to get blocked and reported.

Set it up today, then check your weakest stage

This free app is the cheapest sales tool most Mauritian businesses will ever have. Set it up this week, save your quick replies, and make the five-minute reply your team’s first rule.

Then find out whether conversion is really your weakest stage. The free Market Dominator Scorecard takes a few minutes and shows which of the five stages to fix first. If you want the full plan built with you, look at the Market Dominator Blueprint.
